LAST SON: part 2- Clark Kent finds his profession

In which Clark Kent decides on a career and the glasses are explained.

1.  EXT. – DAWN - A MOUNTAIN SOMEWHERE IN ASIA

Fade- in
The sun rises over some mountains covered in snow, a title reads: “Somewhere in Asia, 20 years later...”

The sunrise is being appreciated by a young man dressed in a parka. This young man is CLARK KENT (21 years old, tall, black hair, blue eyes). The cold of the place doesn´t seem to bother him and he`s with his face uncovered. He looks relaxed in there, he takes a few deep breaths.
CLARK closes his eyes a bit, as if focusing in the distance.
A voice at his back talks to him.

VOICE

Beautiful, isn´t it?

CLARK looks back and sees a man dressed in a parka too. The man is GEORGE TAYLOR (45,tall, big, looks very wise). CLARK looks back at the landscape again.

CLARK
It´s the most beautiful thing I`ve ever seen... I feel a peace I haven´t felt in my life, like a sense of belonging...

               GEORGE
Yes, I know what you mean...Every time I get to come to this corner of the world to write some article or something, I always try to get to this mountain so I can come back a new man when I return home...

The two men stare at the landscape a while longer, then GEORGE speaks again.

               GEORGE
You know, Clark...About that sense
Of belonging you mentioned...It´s funny to hear a young man like yourself talk about it, and it´s not the first time you`ve mentioned it...how come a young farmer from Kansas gets to feel so lost in this world? Especially one who has been seeing the world for the last two years.

CLARK answers with some doubt in his voice.

CLARK
It`s kind of complicated...you see...Well, you see, I was adopted by my parents and ...er...it´s kind of natural I get to feel that way, right?

GEORGE looks at CLARK with an almost paternal gaze.

GEORGE
Look, Clark ...I understand your feelings about being adopted and all, but having been a journalist all this time, I can tell when there´s much more to a story than what the subject itself is telling...But never mind, I understand if you are not ready to tell me, just know you can talk to me if you feel like it.

              CLARK
Thank you, Mr. Taylor...that means a lot to me.

               GEORGE
Darn it, boy! At least get it through your head...Don´t call me Mr. Taylor, my name is George...

               CLARK (smiling)
Sure thing Mr...er...George...

               GEORGE
Much better, kid...may be I can still make something out of you...Who knows? Maybe there´s a journalist inside you waiting to meet the world...

              CLARK
Me? A journalist?...Never thought about it, I do like writing and I used to do it for the school paper.

                GEORGE
Well, Clark...Way I see it you don´t have your whole life to think about it...But you do have the next few hours to do if you want...We better pick up things now cause we got us a long journey back on our way down and let me tell you, this is the part of the trip that gets really hard...

               CLARK
Oh, ok, if you say so...I`ll just take a final look at the view and then I`m ready to go...

CLARK looks again at the landscape, smiling. The wind blows his hair a little.

               CLARK
     (muttering to himself)
Clark Kent...intrepid reporter...

CLARK takes out a little notebook out of his parka and a pen out of the notebook and writes on it, we can hear his voice over the words we see him writing.

              CLARK
Dear Ma and Pa:
Today I had a great talk with Mr. Taylor and he gave me quite an insight on what to look for in my life.

Fade-out.

2.  INT. DAY. SMALLVILLE, KENT FARM

We see the letter that CLARK wrote, an old hand is holding it. The voice of a woman is reading it, it`s the voice of MARTHA KENT (60, gray hair, gray eyes, looks very sweet).

MARTHA (reading the letter)

“...you will be happy to know that I have learned a lot from my travels around the world and I think it has been the best experience for me. Ma, tell Pa he can stop worrying about me running around and never setting roots, cause I´m going back home immediately and right after I’m going to study journalism. I`ve been thinking about the Metropolis U, that is where Mr. Taylor went to and he tells me it’s the best...”

We see MARTHA´s face, as she looks back at JON KENT (60, tall, white hair, blue yes, looks strong for his age) with a smile on her face, JON looks very proud of what he´s hearing.
They are both sitting at the kitchen with breakfast on the table. The kitchen seems very traditional in a very American mid western way of life.

   MARTHA
“Give Pa a hug and have him give you one from my part, love, your son, Clark”...oh, my, Jon! Our boy is finally coming home!

                 JON
Don´t get too excited about it dear, it does sound like he won´t be staying long. Although I am very glad to hear he´s finally found his way, I`m just not sure if journalism is such a good idea...It could give him too much exposure to the media vultures if he keeps playing secret guardian angel to Humanity.

                MARTHA
Oh, Jon! You worry too much...In all this time he has managed to help hundreds of people all over the world and no one has been able to say what happened or who did the rescue! I don´t know about you, but I`m very proud of my son!

                JON (smiling)
I too am proud of him! Prouder than if he were our own flesh and blod!... We seem we have done a great job as parents, wouldn´t you say dear?

JON says this while serving himself some fried eggs, bacon and pancakes that are heavily poured with maple syrup. MARTHA looks disapprovingly.

MARTHA
Yes, I´d say we have...I`ve certainly been a better mother to Clark than a better wife to you...I shouldn´t let you eat all that at your age, Jon! Cholesterol won´t make your heart beat better, you know?

JON
Oh, c´mon, woman! You know Dr. Hubbard said I was doing better than an ox after my last check up!

                MARTHA
Jonathan Kent! Don´t you “woman” me!...

JONATHAN hurries to her side and hugs her softly , he kisses her and looks at her with profound love.

JON
Martha Clark Kent!... You worry about me as much as I do about Clark! No husband in the world could ask for a better wife!

He kisses her again, this time on a cheek. She smiles back at him.

MARTHA
You sure are a flatterer, Jon!...You remind me how it was that you won my heart all those years ago...but still don´t think you are going to get out of this so easy, you will have to wash the plates today!

                 JON
Darn it!...I`m a poor victim of a beautiful mistress! I shall wash them plates and have them so cleaned that you will get to see your pretty face reflected on them!

                MARTHA
Well, you better do it so!

The voice of CLARK behind them makes them look back in surprise.

                CLARK
That`s it, Ma! Don´t let him sweet talk you!

We see CLARK standing at the door of the kitchen that leads to a yard. He´s dressed in a blue t-shirt, red jacket and blue jeans, he´s holding a backpack over his right shoulder and he´s smiling wide.

JON AND MARTHA (at the same time)
Clark!!

They run to him and hug him, we see CLARK rest his head between their shoulders, he looks very pleased and relaxed.
They let go of the hug, MARTHA caresses CLARK´s hair with affection.

MARTHA
Well, well, Mr. Kent!...Been a while since we had a haircut, huh?

                CLARK
Awww, c`mon Ma!

                JON
Let her, son! Better she nags you than me! Haha...Tell me, Clark, how come you got back here so soon? We just read your letter telling us you were coming back.I thought you would do some last sightseeing on your way back.

                CLARK
Well, I was going to take the long way back home, but I realized half way here I was really anxious to get back home and start things going on that, well, let´s just say I took the “express way”...

CLARK looks to the floor as he says the final words, avoiding his father´s eyes.

                 JON
The “express way”??? you don´t mean...

JON makes a gesture with his hand like a plane flying while he points at CLARK with his other hand. CLARK shakes his head answering positively to the question.

JON
How could you? What if a satellite had seen you, son? This is exactly the kind of behavior that will...

                CLARK
“...that will get me dissected like a lab rat”...I know, I know...Pa, believe me, I took every single precaution so nobody would see me.

MARTHA
C`mon, Jon! Don`t give the boy a hard time! He´s finally back and you are spoiling every thing with your Grinchy mode!

                JON
You are right, Martha! I`m sorry Clark, I just worry about you, you know that! Now come on and sit at the table, have breakfast with us.

They all sit at the table, JON looks silently as MARTHA gives CLARK they same plate he had served himself a while ago. CLARK takes a bite of the pancakes and looks very pleased.

CLARK
MMM...Ma! these are great! I hadn´t realized how much I missed your cooking until I took a bite of these pancakes! You are just the best!

                MARTHA
Thank you, Clark...but here, there´s not enough maple syrup.

MARTHA squeezes the maple syrup bottle letting a lot of it fall into CLARK´s pancakes. JON looks at the scene while shaking his head to the sides and smiling.

3.  EXT. – DAY – SMALLVILLE, KENT FARM

We see the farm from outside.

Fade-out

7. INT. – SUNSET – SMALLVILLE, KENT FARM, THE BARN

JON enters the barn.
JON
Clark, you here?

CLARK answers from the second floor.

               CLARK
I`m here, Pa...upstairs.

JON goes up and finds his son adjusting a telescope and watching the sky through it. The second floor of the barn is setup as a study room, with a desk and some other stuff.

JON
It seems old habits die hard, huh? I remember that not so long ago you`d come up here and watch through that same telescope as if you were looking for a kindred spirit out there.

              CLARK
Actually, that´s exactly what I was hoping for... Since the only explanation we’ve had from my origins have been that strange ship you and mom found me in, it was logical to me to look for others like myself out of the planet.

             JON
And when you didn´t, you decided to leave us and go look everywhere in the planet, right?

CLARK looks at his father with a hurtful look, as if apologizing.

            JON
Oh,no...son...I understand completely . I actually think it was a great thing for you to do, you seem more mature, more at peace.

           CLARK
Oh, and I am, Pa...I missed you guys and everything here, but the things I saw...This is such a beautiful planet, I only wish others could see it as I do

           JON
I believe many others do, Clark. Faith, you see? You just gotta have faith in Humanity. But now, tell me about your plans for the city. You will have to be extra careful there, too many people crowded in one place, too many prying eyes...One person notices something weird and it´s a matter of time before others do, too.

          CLARK
Yes, I learned so in Paris and then again in London...and this is Metropolis we are talking about, the greatest city on Earth. But I do have a plan to let myself be invisible to others and not raise too many questions should I have to use my...skills...

          JON
What kind of plan, son?

CLARK goes to a desk and opens a drawer, he gets something out of it and when he shows it to his father, we see a pair of thick glasses.

JON (with curiosity in his voice)
My old glasses? Been a long time since I last used them...I don´t understand.

CLARK  puts them on and smiles.

CLARK
Get it? I will use them all the time, and that way no one will have reasons to suspect short sighted Clark Kent has anything special to show people...at least nothing more than the most unfashionable pair of glasses ever!

           JON
Yes, I see...and they do change your face a lot, should some one ever see you do something extra ordinary he wouldn´t recognize you if you just remember to loose  the glasses before doing it...good thinking son, although I wouldn´t expect it to work forever.

          CLARK
I guess there will be some other adjustments, but for now this might work...and let me tell you, if I learned something out there in the world, is that my skills are to be used, for the sake of others if not for my own.

          JON
Took me a while to get used to all those wonderful things you do, Clark, but I must admit you are right...I`ve suspected for a long time that you were sent here for a reason...Although being fashionable won´t seem to be one of them...

CLARK (watching the glasses in his hand)
Haha...Yeah, I guess not.

        JON
And what are these?

JON grabs some brochures and magazines that are on the desk, they are all about Metropolis.

CLARK
Just some information about Metropolis, the sights and such...To get around when I get there...

JON opens up a magazine with the title “NEWSTIME, flips over a few pages and sees a spread photo of Metroplis.

JON
You ask me, these place looks to crowded, I don´t think I could live there ever, not even for a second...

       CLARK
That´s just how life at the big cities are...I`ll manage somehow.

JON keeps flipping over the pages, we focus on the cover of a magazine. There´s a picture of a tall, handsome man with red hair and dressed very elegant, the headline at the cover says: “LEX LUTHOR: MAN OF THE YEAR, EVERY YEAR”. We see the face of the man in the picture real close.
